Investment Concept: How to Lock in Profits and Trade Stocks Without Losing Money

Meta Description: Learn the essential stock trading mindset and profit-locking strategies to prevent gains from turning into losses. Discover stop-loss techniques to help SIT students survive and grow in the capital market.

Before making any investment, the most important step in building the right investment mindset is having a clear plan. To understand our risks and profit opportunities, we must define the support levels, resistance levels, profit targets, and most importantly, always set a Stop Loss.

In stock trading, everyone prefers profits over losses. However, in reality, nothing guarantees a 100% profitable investment. No one can promise that the price will perfectly hit your target without fluctuating, or that it won’t break a major support level and plummet.

Trend Forecasting: The Core of a Trading Mindset

The best thing we can do is forecast trends based on real chart data. This keeps us on the right side of the market rather than the wrong one, thereby increasing our chances of making a profit. Furthermore, when combined with a strong trading mindset focused on risk management, our chances of surviving and profiting in the capital market significantly improve.

This is the origin of the concept: “Never let a profit turn into a loss.” It is a mindset that has helped the portfolio grow and survive to this day. You might make a lot or a little, but the primary goal is always to protect your profits.

Why Shouldn’t You Fixate on Targets and Forget the Risks?

Many investors buy a stock hoping to sell it only when it reaches their target. But luck isn’t always on your side. Just one mistake can instantly flip a profitable position into a loss. If you hold out for your original target and refuse to sell, the price might drop so deeply that the damage to your portfolio becomes unbearable.

An Example of Risk-Limiting Trading:

  • Plan the trade with a support level at 100.
  • Set resistance (profit targets) at 120 and 140.
  • Set a Stop Loss at 96.

The Risk/Reward (RR) ratio here is worthwhile because you are only risking a 4-point loss for a chance to make a 20 to 40-point profit.

Suppose you enter the trade according to the plan. The price rises from 100 to 110 but loses momentum and gradually pulls back near your entry cost at 101. At this moment, who can guarantee that the price won’t break the support level or that it will definitely bounce back to 120?

In the stock market, you cannot guarantee future events, but you can always “limit your mistakes.”

How to Lock in Profits: A 1-Point Profit is Better Than a 1-Point Loss

If the price starts pulling back, never let your profit turn into a loss. Once you are in the green, pocketing the money is a certainty. Even if you are left with just 1 point or 1 tick of profit, it is still better than a loss.

Just remember this: always set a stop loss at an acceptable risk level (e.g., 4 points). A loss of this size can easily be recovered by sticking to the trading plan. Therefore, walking away with a 1-point profit when you initially risked 4 points is not a failure at all—because the finale result is that “we survived and made a profit.” When the market conditions are more favorable, we can always go back to chasing targets of 10, 20, or 100 points.

Conclusion: The SIT CLASS Profit-Locking Concept

How many investors look down on a meager 1-tick profit, refuse to sell, and end up watching the price slide 10 to 100 ticks down? It eventually becomes a dead stock stuck in their portfolio that they can’t bear to cut. If you are investing tens of millions, a single tick of profit or loss can be worth hundreds of thousands of money.

Experience has taught us that an investment mindset heavily focused on capital protection might not yield the most glamorous short-term gains, but it is the proven way to survive in reality. This is the core approach that SIT CLASS students apply to lock in profits, protect their capital, and grow together in the market.
